Show My Pony

Social Network for Riders, Horses, and Ponies

My horse recently was discovered with a tendon injury. Does that mean that she's out for the summer and season?

I looked up it and it says: "horses with a tendon injury cannot usually be worked again for at least six months after 6-8 weeks box rest."

I'm really worried as she's really the only horse (and she's my baby!!) that I have to ride this show season..

Cold applications, anti-inflammatory drugs and bandaging is what they advise for treatment. Does anyone else have any other treatment ways for a tendon injury?

It depends on how bad the injury was. i know exactly how you feel. My horse fractured her hip so i can't ride her and we will probably have to retire her. Is there any other horse that you could use?

if you decide to polo wrap your horse make sure you do it correctly or it will casue other problems.....I think it really depends on how bad the injury of the tendon is.....

well, from what we can see, it's just swollen, and it was giving off some heat yesterday after the show.

I started soaking it today, and added the bandaging for it, then soaked it too so the water would stay on for a bit 'cause it was super hot and it seemed like the water was already evaporating.

she limps, but thats to be expected if shes sore, right? I guess we'll just see.. and hopefully the swelling will go down.

as for another horse, not one of my trainers, but i did get offered to ride one of the boarders horses, but I don't think I'll be able to do that 'cause she's not really a 'pleasure' horse from what I've seen when she rides her. But we'll have to see.

well, remember that showing isn't everything
maybe u can help your horse by just grooming her, and talking to her.
and maybe you don't have to show in pleasure if that horse u wer almost going to ride isnt a "pleasure" horse. or u could train it to keep a decent head set and speed.

hope ur horse does better

thanks everyone..

update:

The swelling has decreased ALOT! She still has a slight limp to her when she trots on the lunge line, but it is very unnoticable, but would probably increase if I was on her.
My trainer also thinks its a bruised tendon. So does that ring any bells on how to treat her properly?

I'm not to worried about being able to show her, I just want her to get better for her well-being and my sanity. :)

you should just love on her and let your horse know that your not giving up. we had a cow show up on our property and my horse jumped the pasture fence witch is over 5 feet adn iit tore her back leg. like completly went through her skin and thorugh the tendon. we just spoiled her with love and let her hand grazed and within a month, i started just walking her around bareback and slowly have been doing more and more. i am now to the point were we are trotting groundpoles. just believe in your horse and show her that.

I have. I go there everyday to soak her leg and then just love on her, telling her that she needs to get better.

I just had my senior pictures done at the barn, and I got on her bareback for a few shots, and I had to double hand her to keep her under control. She was so excited ( I guess we do have a connection!! ) she kept wanting to trot, though I could feel the limp so I was trying to keep her at a walk, but I know that if I let her run, she would've without a care to the world. She's getting better, I'm just hoping that it doesn't get reinjured and have to take more time to heal. :)

And good job with your mare. :) Give her love for me too!! Hehe.

Yeah it has to do with how badly hurt she was. You don't want to push your horse right back into the show circuit right away, that could cause much more damage such as permanent lameness. So talk to your vet and be extremely careful!

put some cooling medicine on her leg and seran wrap it and put a polo wrap around it but put a polo wrap on the other leg too balance her out. do that at night then take it off in the morning and the swelling should go down some and the heat should go down some as well

Thanks for the tip. But the swelling has already gone done, and I already got the okay from my trainer to try and show her again this year. :D Wish us luck!
