Show My Pony

Social Network for Riders, Horses, and Ponies

I have a 12ish year old gelding who has been blanketed all winter. This spring it has gotten very nice outside (sometimes upper 70s ferenheight). The problem is that even though we have done everything from bathing him, currying him for hours, and using a shedding blade, he is still as furry as ever! I dont know what to do because we jump at least 2 times a week, 3 foot courses and he is ridden at least 3 other times a week, and he is so hot! i feel bad beacause the sun is blazing, we are jumping, and he is sweating horribly! We cant do our usaul ride because he gets so tired so soon, and shows are coming up! i have heard the usual "maybe he knows the weather better then us" thing but i still dont know what to do?
Has this happened to any of your horses?
Do you have any sugestions!?

yeah i know what you are talking about. if a horse has a heavy coat and they get worked often, sometimes we give them some sort of clipping. im not an expert in body clippings, but im sure you can search it online. but that is what i think you should try doing.

Body clipping is prolly your best bet! I actually have to do that to my horse tomorrow just on his belly and legs bc we have an event this weekend! I feel ya tho!

Well, you can try flax seeds and corn oil. Both of those tend to make them drop their coats but it takes a little while. Some times our horses shed out as late as July which makes them very hot. My horses coat tends to be curly and his hair gets yanked out by the girth when he sweats. I used to have to clip him. This year he shed out great. If you are working him you would probably be bset to at least give him a trace clip if not clip him all the way. Just remember if it gets cold you will have to be careful to blanket him appropriatly. His normal blanket may not be enough since he unnaturally lost his coat. Good luck! Oh, and you will probably hear that clipping him will mess up his coat...don't listen to them. Sevens coat grows back in fine.

I haven't worked my horse very often lately. But i know exactly about this!!My horse is sheeding and had a blanket on all winter. She is very dusty too. Think you could help me?! JK. Haha, It WILL eventually come off.I use a fleece girth. So even then I fell bad just as if she has a heavy coat!

well, ive noticed that lately where i am its supposed to be warm, but its freakin 60/50degrees! lol so he's got the right idea.

hav u ever considered shaving him? a lot of jumpers/hunters do that and make funky designs on their rumps. its cool lol

i meant clipping, not literally shave all his hair off

i recommend clipping him too

i know what your talking about we have two school ponys like that where i teach and we have to shave them in the late spring/early summer, it really helps them alot, i can see it in their faces the first few days after they have been clipped, so maybe you'll have to clip you fluffy monster

clipping would be the best if he is that bad. probably a hunt clip (shaved body except legs) or a full body clip. he wont get tired as much and it will be a lot faster to walk him out because he will feel cooler :)

My favorite's are Fjords, QH's, and Trakehner's. Fjords: Fjords are very sweet horses. They have freakin amazing personalities and will do anything to please you. The fjord I lease is Sparta. Everyone told me he is a crappy horse and Fjords are only…
